My 2006 diary January: Hard at work completing the manuscript of my new book. Finally delivered it on time! February: Now that I have delivered the manuscript I have had a little spare time to do some voluntary work for the Metropolitan Police History Society. Just a little chance after so many years of using archives to put something back so others can benefit. March 16: I have been attending the Grey's Inn Hospital Audio Clinic for a year now and receiving treatment for hyperacusis. (This is a condition where sounds at ordinary levels are interpreted as painful. For more information visit www.hyperacusis.net and www.hyperacusis.org ) Today's appointment confirmed what I had suspected, that for me, the only known treatment for this condition has not worked. Not only that but I have recently developed tinnitus. I am typing this now while listening to a CD of soothing sea noises. My main reason for including this here is to promote a greater understanding of hyperacusis in the general public. I'm not fishing for sympathy, I'd just be happy if people didn't think it was funny. 21: A busy day! This morning I recorded a contribution for ZizZag Productions - a programme on Hypnosurgery to be broadcast on 10 April on More4. I was mainly talking about the history of anaesthesia. This evening I was at Ingatestone Library to talk about Essex Murders. I had a wonderful time, and there was a great audience. Everyone at the Library was so friendly helpful and welcoming. A great evening! April Busy doing the initial edit on the new book, and working on the index. Publication date is 19 October 2006 August 11 Recorded an interview as part of a TV programme called Medical Mavericks, to be shown next year. October The Crooks Who Conned Millions is out at last and I am delighted with the appearance of the finished book. November 7th. Talk at the U3A Westcliffe on Sea about Essex murders. Had a great time, they made me very welcome and it was a large and enthusiastic audience. 17th Interviewed on BBC radio London by Robert Elms about 'Crooks'. He quickly put me at my ease and we had a great chat. It seemed to be over very quickly! On the same day I was contacted by Sutton about two possible new true crime books, so I am hard at work now.
